THE LEARNING GUIDE TO THIS ISSUE

CHOP CHOP Jr. CucumBers anD Cottage Cheese • RECIPES JUST RIGHT FOR THE LITTLEST COOKS

LET’S MAKE A SANDWICH! • A sandwich is the ultimate grab-and-go meal.

Classic Egg SanDwich • Starting your day with an egg and a whole-grain English muffin means that you’ll get plenty of protein to keep you going until lunchtime. Making this sandwich is as quick as it is easy. In just 15 minutes (or less), you will have a nourishing meal for you and a lucky somebody else!

Fact or Myth? Protein is the “building block” of the human body

Nut Butter anD Banana SanDwich • We don’t mean to disrespect jelly, but swapping in a banana turns this easy classic into a nourishing meal that will keep you going for hours. Try it and see!

Do-it-Yourself Lettuce Wraps • This is our version of an East Asian–style lettuce wrap, and it’s kind of like a sandwich, if you think of the lettuce as the bread. Everyone can assemble their own wrap, which makes it a fun, easy, and interactive meal. According to Kid Recipe Tester Linnea, the only tricky part is folding the lettuce! But you’ll get the hang of it.

Basic GrilleD Cheese • Not sure what to eat? With its toasty outside and melty inside, a grilled cheese sandwich always hits the spot. And once you learn to make it, you can get as fancy as you like!

Anything-SalaD SanDwich Filling • Here’s a versatile and creamy dressing that you can turn into one of three sandwich fillings! Will it be chickpea salad, egg salad, or tuna salad? Try them all to find your favorite!

Make a Meal from a Can? YES YOU CAN! Pizza SliDers • This recipe offers the flavors of pizza in a fun-size mini burger. We love the deep, rich tomato flavor that comes from canned tomato paste. If you’ve never used it before, you’re in for a treat!

MiX-anD-Match Coleslaw • Coleslaw is a classic sandwich side or—depending on where you live—topping. What kind do you like best? You don’t have to pick! Our all-in-one recipe offers you basic instructions for making three different variations. We don’t usually call for bags of vegetables that are already cut, but we make an exception for coleslaw because it’s tricky to cut cabbage very thinly (even for an adult). If you want to make your own cabbage mix, shred or finely slice ½ head of green, savoy, or napa cabbage and shred 2 carrots.

WHAT’S DIFFERENT?

Banana “Ice Cream” Sandwiches • This recipe calls for only two ingredients and some patience. It takes a while for the bananas to freeze. And then, once they’re frozen, it takes a while for them to get creamy in the food processor. And then it really is best to freeze the assembled sandwiches until they’re solid. But after that? Creamy, dreamy perfection. It’s totally worth the wait!

EVERYTHING CELERY • Celery! You might not think about it that much. Maybe only a few people would call it their favorite vegetable. But we really rely on it: chopped up, for crunch and flavor, in tuna, chicken, and egg salad; cut into sticks for easy, juicy snacking; and sautéed with onions and carrots as the basis for so many of the soups and stews we make. We even sliver up the leaves to use as a seasoning!

Simple Celery SalaD • This is a really easy side dish that makes the most of celery’s crisp texture and bright flavor.

WalDorf SalaD • This is our version of a classic salad that was named for the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City, where it was invented...
