Still Here • By 2035 many cities, states, countries, and regions will only allow the sale of zero-emission new vehicles, and it will in theory be achievable because pure EVs will be the only new options in most showrooms.
New Water-Splitting Method Makes Hydrogen Like Plants Do • The new process is called artificial photosynthesis, and although it’s not a new idea, the new experiment shows a huge improvement in efficiency—even greater than natural photosynthesis.
First Look: New Tire Made From Soybean Oil, Rice Husks, and Pine Resin • Goodyear says there are 17 sustainable ingredients, including recycled polyester and plant-based components like soybean oil, rice husk waste, and “bio-renewable” pine resin. It also uses steel with “high recycled content” and “ISCC-certified mass balance polymers from bio- and bio-circular feedstock.”
First Look: Are You Afeela’n It? • We know it’s a five-passenger sedan-ish thing, nearly as long as Acura’s MDX SUV but with a roofline nearly 10 inches lower, and it’ll have all-wheel drive. Given the timing and Honda’s partnership with GM, we imagine it could use that automaker’s Ultium running gear and batteries.
First Drive: Genesis G70 Shooting Brake • The Shooting Brake’s footprint is identical to the G70 sedan’s, and it’s the same height overall. All the sheetmetal from the B-pillar forward is identical to the superbly executed refresh of the sedan for 2022.
First Look: 2024 Volkswagen ID7 • For now, this ID7 with the funky digital paintwork you see in the images is still a prototype; the production version will be shown in the second quarter of 2023, so the wait won’t be long. The colorful camouflage actually emits light from 22 panels of the car thanks to a special layering process that allows a current to be supplied throughout the paintwork for the light-up effect.
First Look: Porsche Vision 357 • The sculpted body instantly recalls the 356’s beautiful curves, but there’s no rear-mounted engine in the modern version. Unlike the 356’s 1.1-liter boxer-four engine making only 40 hp, the 357’s mid-mounted 4.0-liter naturally aspirated GT3 flat-six makes 493 hp.
First Drive: 2023 Honda Pilot • The latest Pilot also has some increased capability to go along with its new-look duds, thanks in part to a TrailSport model fitted with enough hardware to get after it a bit when the going gets dirty.
First Test: 2023 BMW iX M60 • Odd though the iX might appear, its lineup follows familiar BMW practice, delivering saucy performance in its standard iX xDrive50 format and even more in the M Performance version, dubbed the iX M60. A reworked rear motor with a longer stator and rotor (and double the amperage) relative to the M50 is responsible for the M60’s upgrade from 516 horsepower and 564 lb-ft to 532 hp and 749 lb-ft.
First Test: 2023 Mazda 3 Hatchback • We’ve called the Mazda 3 Turbo AWD hatchback a compelling rival to the Audi A3s and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupes of the world. But what about non-turbo variants like the Carbon Edition tested here? Well, it’s still compelling.
First Test: 2023 Ford Maverick Tremor • At the test track, the Tremor did trim half a second from our previous low 0–60 time set with the Maverick FX4, scoring a 6.5-second result that feels like a perfectly accurate snapshot of its performance.
Rear View • We looked derisively at proposed fuel rationing intended to reduce California smog, blissfully unaware of the coming OPEC embargo that would make it a reality. We also previewed the downsized Mustang and fell in love with the...
